The community of Mar Vista has done it once again! Now in its fourth year and back by very popular demand, the Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase is just a few weeks away! On Saturday, APRIL 21st from 10 am to 4 pm, over 90 Mar Vista residents will open up their gardens for viewing and this year we have added 50 NEW gardens that we know will inspire and delight.
The self-guided tour is organized into 6 geographic areas, each of which can be easily walked or biked. On display will be intimate views of drought-resistant landscapes, edible gardens, and sustainable features from composting techniques to water capture practices. Urban farming takes on a new meaning with the addition of an aquaponic farm, something I encourage you to see, and there will be chicken coops galore!
With so many gardens to choose from, it’s recommended that you personalize your tour in order to get the most out of your day. Each garden has been
photographed and detailed as to style and/or sustainability topic as well as geographic area on the well organized website. From the website you can select the gardens you wish to visit, then pin on the website’s online map for easy organization.
No time to plan? Then you may simply pick up a map on the day of the tour at Showcase Central located at 3635 Grand View Blvd.
This event is FREE and is part of a nation wide celebration of Earth Day. The tour also emphasizes ocean friendly gardens and habitats that support much needed pollinators such as honeybees and monarch butterflies. As a member of the Mar Vista Green Committee that is organizing the event, I’ll be stationed at Showcase Central on Grand View from 10 ‘til noon. Please stop by and say hello! I’m hoping you’ll be able to make time and attend the event, find inspiration and come away with some great ideas for your home.
